New Jam City
New Jam City, the unofficial Waypoint game jam runs from July 1 to August 1.
I'm co-hosting my first online game jam. Almost wrote ham... which means it's lunch time. The jam is called New Jam City and can be found over on itch.io. It's open for everyone but is setup for the Waypoint community. On twitter look for #NewJamCity.
A game jam is simple - it's an impetus to create a game, in this case a video game, all within a certain period of time. Since Waypoint is fully of people from various backgrounds, we've gone for a longer jam so those, like myself, who don't have a lot of free time can make a game.
The game doesn't have to be anything fancy. Just look at the first and last game I made for a jam - The Integration Game. It was a simple point-and-click adventure, if it's even worthy of that title. But I'm making games in Twine. and as the New Jam City description shows there's a lot of ways to make games.
I'm doing this in part to force myself to make another game. I'm teaching a small class on making games in the Autumn so it'd be good to have more examples by then. But as ever, with the kid, it can be hard to sit down and get something done. More than that my ideas keep spiralling out of control. And I need to pare down what I'm trying to accomplish and as ever, focus on the story.
