One Game Dad 44: My Kingdom For A Spaceship
I'm getting bored with No Man' Sky. I can feel my enthusiasm drain away because of the main gameplay loop.
I don't play games to do chores. I have plenty of those around the house as is, and that's a never ending cycle with a child and a cat wrecking havoc. Why would I want to do something similar in a video game.
And yet here I am playing No Man's Sky and doing that. Only I'm doing chores for others and to stay alive. I'm not talking about quests, though some of what I'm doing are quests. But by and large I'm participating in a gameplay loop which is anything but fun for me. Namely, collect resources in order to have the energy or fuel to collect more resources.
I've never played things like Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, or Animal Crossing because I don't want to do chores. I want to experience stories. And while there are stories in the mundane, what I'm getting from a game like No Man's Sky is not that. If it was meant to be some zen exercise about focusing on the journey rather than the destination I think it's failed.
There is a story in No Man's Sky, but it is excessively focusing on tutorializing which is just a bunch of chores. Maybe it's my fault for selecting story mode rather than another mode, but I wanted to see the story the game had to tell not be bogged down by the gameplay loops. This does give me something to think about when it comes to storytelling and the intents of those loops. Of course I just did an episode of The Writing Game on that very thing.
