One Game Dad 47: Homebody
Sometimes you just don’t want to be around others. For me that’s most days.
All because I’m becoming more of a curmudgeon. Without the conservative bent that is. But there is a distinct lack of energy on my part for socializing after a certain time, or if it’s been a long day full of meetings. Funny thing is I can always pull from reserves to do a podcasts and interview people.
It’s weird how performing, and that’s what hosting a podcast is, brings that out of me. And to some degree I approach networking and socializing the same way. It’s not that I’m sucking in my gut, or behaving vastly differently. I’m simply putting in energy to talking to others rather than staying in my own head.
Part of the reason for wanting to stay put is because I can get some sort of work done. It’s not always writing or editing, but thinking. Contemplation and working out of ideas tends to happen best for me when I’m not interacting with others. I need that time. It’s a hard thing to get during the work day when I need to be putting those ideas into action. Which leaves the evenings and weekends.
Case in point, just walking to pick up the Kid from daycare the other day I had an idea for the next issue of the comic book series I’m writing. Then I had an idea about how to resolve some narrative issues on the game I’m working on. Would that have happened around other people? Maybe, but generally and this is based from experience, my ideas come not when I’m with others but when I’m alone and not focused on anything in particular.
It’s why I like playing video games, and continually return to something like Destiny 2. They’re easy and entertaining without being taxing. And as you’ll see I’m back at Destiny 2 and playing a round or two of Gambit the new PvEvP game mode. You can find this episode on Twitch, Youtube, Stitcher, iHeartRadio and iTunes.
