Fulltime HEL: Episode 3 - Mushrooming
Wandering the Finnish taiga in search of fungi is a yearly tradition for most Finns, even those born and bred in the city. The fact that forests permeate every town makes that easy. Access to wilderness is never far away either. But in Helsinki, there’s something else popping up like mushrooms — co-working spaces.
I’m a freelance writer. Which means I can work from just about anywhere. At the moment I work from home, but I want that to change. I could just go sit in a cafe, but I find that expensive since I’m always tempted to buy a pastry or a cup of coffee. A library would work too, but given that I’ve taken to podcasting the need for silence doesn’t lend itself to recording. Which is where Mushrooming comes in. They’re the open source network of co-working spaces in Helsinki and other Finnish cities.
They’re not a startup, like so many others I write about on this blog. Instead they’re simply a network. They’re offering for free what Sharedesk or Desktime charge for. Granted, they take a cut from the co-working space rather than you, the user, but there’s something refreshing about being able to simply find something without having to fork over some cash.
So for this week’s episode of Fulltime HEL, I interviewed two of the team from Mushrooming — Hannu and Inari. We spoke about why they started Mushrooming, their plans for it and what the benefits are for those looking for an office outside their home. If you’re looking for a co-working space in Helsinki then be sure to check out their site at Mushrooming.fi or the Mushrooming Helsinki Facebook Group.
