One Game Dad 37: Office Moving Day

One Game Dad 37: Office Moving Day

June is here and with it my new office in Games Factory.

Said creative industrial output facility is actually a co-working space with offices for games companies, desks for freelancers, and day rentals for visitors. As they like to describe it - an embassy and showroom - but really a hub for game development in Helsinki. And I'll be sitting in it and working from there for the foreseeable future.

So we moved in on Friday. Not that I had much to move there but we got our office. By we I mean the team I'm partnering with to both share an office and make a game. At the same time I get to continue running Third Culture Kids and doing story consulting for other companies. Being in Games Factory is only going to make this easier and more successful.

Part of moving into this new office was also ordering a new computer. Something that was supposed to take one to four weeks for delivery. It took four days. Three really as I ordered it Friday and it was delivered Monday. So once I sort a desk I'll switch to that and enjoy the whole process of setting it up.

Writing may not need the latest computer and really I could do it on an old Apple 2 if I wanted and had an appropriate printer. However, since I'm working in game development I need a computer that can run Unity 5 or Unreal 4. Both game engines need some power especially when you're doing development. And as a game writer it's not just writing I'm doing, but game design, narrative design, implementation and experimentation. Having a computer that lets me use the two most common game engines is only going to benefit me in the long run.

Especially since I'm interested in procedurally generated stories. But I ramble about that during the show as I play State of Decay 2. You can find this episode on TwitchYoutubeStitcheriHeartRadio and iTunes. This podcast is hosted by the Third Culture Kids network.
